Aunt A sent this to me and I sent it to Jiejie. Ah...having Jie made me braver because I admired the way she threw herself into new experiences and challenges and I decided that I should stop fearing rejections and disappointments...having children made me want to be braver and better...
(We were going to Orchard to meet Auntie Xinyi for a birthday breakfast!)
This post is dedicated to Mei Mei, the cutie pie who has brought a lot of joy to our home. Once she knew she was tired and wanted to go to sleep. I was busy so she took the stool from the kitchen and went to the bathroom to switch on the light, climb up to the counter, squeeze the toothpaste and brushed her teeth. I went in to check on her and she showed me how she climbed backside down first to the stool, brought it out to stand on and switched off the light before returning it to the kitchen. Amazing independence.
(She took a fancy to this Chanel paper bag so Mama brought her Chanel bag to match hers)
She really enjoyed doing all those activity books I bought from Taobao, claiming that she wanted to be a nerd so that she could be ready to go to Bukit Panjang Pri.
(Aunt Xinyi told Mei to ask Papa to buy a real and tiny Chanel bag for her to put her snacks)
Once, she was not paying attention when I read the devotional. I asked her what the story was about and she claimed, "I can't remember. Sometimes, I have a small brain."
She was distributing gummies and there were two purple ones (her favourite) in one set. I said, "Wow, Mei, you got lucky! Would you be sharing your good fortune?" I thought she would give one purple one to another person, but she chose another set and gave up the best set! Ha.... but at other times, she would sneakily take the good ones and keep them for herself!
(Cafe Q at Orchard. A very pretty pink cafe with lots of IG worthy spots)
Ha a hilarious conversation. She pooped and asked me to change her diaper for her. I told her to ask Papa to do it. She said that Papa said it was smelly.
Mum: I find it smelly too you know.
Mei: But you don't say it.
Mum: So I'm so kind and you make me do more things?
Mei chuckled: I love you!Once, she did not help with clean up and she said, "You don't tell Teacher Nana!" She adored him but we had since stopped having gym classes as the new timing was not convenient.
During the interview Tong was having with the researcher (Tong agreed to the interview to earn some pocket money), she saw the picture with a grasshopper, cockroach, butterfly and said they were insects. She did have quite a good vocabulary for her age and often would start belting out old songs as her siblings sang those songs all the time. She was like an old soul trapped in a young body.
There was the time she said, "The mouse ran as fast as lightning." Nice use of simile. She had her silly moments. She looked out of the kitchen window and saw that the room opposite us had a ball...and it was actually our very own bathroom.
She did silly things like engaging in a screaming competition with Jun...asked her if she wanted to sleep, she said yes...I mean no...I mean yes... I mean no...
Her sassiness sometimes came forth. She saw Xun using a facial cleanser and asked why. Jie explained that it would remove the pimples and she deadpanned, "I don't think it's working."
She loved chicken rice. Ya just plain chicken rice with black sauce. Sotong balls too! She asked for 3.5 sotong balls for dinner one day and when I asked her what if she could not finish it, she replied blithely, "继续努力!“
She wanted to go on the horsey ride in Legoland but was too short. When we asked her what if she was not tall enough to take the ride, she also said, "继续努力!"
She had a sweet tooth and would always ask to eat snacks. I told her that she could not have any snacks if she did not finish her dinner. She declared she would not eat any snacks. I also told her she could not have snacks later if she stayed up late and she said she would drink water all night long. Gosh...
(Avenue Q was awfully pretty. The breakfast was pretty affordable too.)
She often said snarky things that did not befit a 4-year old, like L bozo trash kid, try harder.
Gor loved her to bits but often said that she betrayed him for Gege. hahah. Once she did not want to eat dinner and Gor came up with a game to trick her. "Oh close your eyes. Let's do a blind taste." She decided the food was nice and she wanted to eat dinner after all.
Once when Jie complained that her hair was too long, Mei offered a very simple solution, "You need short hair."
When asked what they wanted to do on holiday, Tong said animals, Jun said theme parks, Jie said vibes and Mei said SHOPPING! She always invited me to go supermarket shopping with her...she also liked to go to Salvation Army because it sold Kindersurprise eggs. We affectionately called it "The Ship Building".
Mei was all sheepish about the new guy friend she made at Berries. She said that she loved him and he loved her. When asked about why she loved him, she said he was handsome and not annoying. When Xun asked her why she thought he loved her, she tried to bribe her and divert the topic by offering her a candy so she didn't have to answer.
(Going to breakfast with Mum's colleagues - matching LV bags. Papa bought it for Mama so she could have matching bags with Xun and she never really took a liking for it. Mei adored it though. It could contain a lot of snacks and it just looked so cute on her arm. Ah... Mama said so all along, the bag was waiting for Mei's arrival...)
She saw the dark rings under my eyes and asked if I was tired. Then she said sweetly, "You had better sleep early."
Jun called her Squishmallow. What a cute name. She named her soft toy cat Cat the cat.
Jie threw the jacket forward in the car and Mei sneered, "Your aim sucks."
She was very well-behaved and sat and waited patiently for a long time, earning praises from my colleagues.
Once, she wanted to eat the cheese tofu that I set aside for Jie as she really loved them. I said I did not even have one as I had given mine to her. She insisted on giving it back to me and we went to and fro till we agreed to share it.
She also tried new food more boldly recently. She tried the glass noodles when we went to Suki Yaki and loved it. She also tried the salty crunchy peanuts and liked them, though she liked the crunchy bit more than the peanut.
She looked so cute with this bracelet. It had a really nifty design - a ball to slide in and out to adjust the length of the bracelet. It fitted her to a T.
She stopped wearing diapers even overnight when she was 4. Sometimes she mocked Gege as he still wore a diaper over his pants at night though he was 7, almost going to 8.
She liked to say "I love you" to wiggle out of difficult situations or embarrassing questions. She often said "I love you" when she senses that people are angry. She said it so often to Waipo and pleased her so much that Wai po had started saying it multiple times to her when she was over at her home...Mei's presence brought great harmony to every place she went to.
Supermarket shopping...ah they bought a lot of junk food
God was really sweet. He let me go through difficult experiences that allowed me to relate to Jie better. For a period of time, i was addicted to korean drama shorts, it was very strange as I hardly ever watched TV. Then Jie came to confess to me that she had been using her phone too much...we talked about how we could improve our phone usage habits...ah....
Then very weirdly, Wai po kept saying that I was putting on too much weight...coincidentally Jie was feeling a little insecure about her body shape...we talked about it and proclaimed that God gave us beautiful bodies!

The fearsome boxer
Tong looked out for Mei. He asked her to sit on the chair instead of the bench as it was hot.
the dashing one
We were at an event at this atas kids' club in Dempsey. When asked to introduce himself, he said, "Handsome boy."
He had a sense of justice - He argued on Mei's behalf that she should get some video time as she was sleeping when they played.
The chocolates in the fridge were placed too high, so he took some down to put on the lower tier for Mei to access them easily.
She had become so brave. She could put her entire face into the water and blow bubbles now
She said to take a photo to show Daddy that she liked the glass noodles.
I asked her if she needed to take her water bottle downstairs with her, she said, "No need, I can drink my saliva." She chuckled. "That's what you told me the other time. So rude." hahahah...that cheeky one.
We chanced upon a carnival and were able to redeem free tickets with our spending!
They were always wearing matching tees : )One day, Jun came back and asked excited, "Do you want to hear the good news or better news? The good news is I have made a new friend, Alice! The better news is Mr Vanan is back!" He was very appreciative of Mr Vanan. Once I was talking to Jie about her past teachers being angels, he gushed that Mr Vanan was an angel too.
