On Monday, poor little Jun kept vomiting and pooping...he must have contracted a stomach flu. Luckily, Mama brought along the stomach flu medicine...
The little one knelt beside the bin whenever he felt like vomiting. He was a dear little boy, he tried not to make a mess and just suffered in silence. I wondered why he had to hold his knife while barfing though.
The illness caused him to be very exhausted so he crept silently to the bed and slept. I did not know that he had gone to sleep till I went around to check where he was hiding.
While I was blogging and doing my things outside in the living room, the sticky pie did not want to remain in his bed and slept in the living room instead. Subsequently, everyone got the stomach flu on Tuesday. Daddy did not go to work and we crossed our fingers that everyone would feel better to make the trip to Yarm on Wednesday.
A very subdued journey with everyone still recovering from the illness...apparently it was such a common illness in winter that the National Health Board issued an advisory for people to refrain from visiting the GP and spreading the illness, instead one should just stay at home, drink lots of water and rest...the symptoms would clear after a few days...
We made it to Yarm. Loved these sleeping shots of the littlest one (ah, till Emmelyn came out in March) - a picture of cherubic innocence
On Friday, everyone was feeling chirpier and ready to explore a new city! We drove to York and went to the Jorvik DIG museum.
We were guided by a museum staff who studied history and archaeology in university before going into field archaeology, then the back-end work of documenting and studying the specimens and finally into educating the public in the museum.
She was very knowledgeable so she shared many valuable insights. Interestingly, there were some similarities between the Ang Moh culture and our Chinese culture! For example, they found a buried corpse with a coin in the mouth, they also found coins being scattered around the house, perhaps for good luck too...
There were 4 digging pits representing 4 eras - whenever we unearthed something, she would expound on its significance. We learnt that the Vikings ate a lot of oysters!
The adventure was not too enticing to the littlest one, he got bored really soon and was very restless.
The staff shared that people were buried in church grounds and within church buildings too, and the close the tombs were to the altars, the closer they were purportedly to God. How interesting.
Now, the kids knew quite a bit about the history of England and Xun was especially interested in the Horrible Histories series of books.
There were some interactive stations...it was not a big place, we finished our adventure in 2 hours and headed to York Christmas Market.
York was replete with historical buildings - the place was charming, beautiful and so ancient..
The Shambles was the oldest High Street in England (according to our airbnb host) and the Harry Potter design team came to this street to get inspiration for their sets. After that, many "magic" shops appeared - like this "World of Wizardry" and there was another called "The shop that shall not be named"...haha!
There were many food stalls but they were closing when we reached.
Marketplace - reminded us of our pasar malams...
Cold cold cold - waiting for papa to find the directions to a Chinese restaurant, supposedly the best in York! Well, the kids loved western food, like pizzas, but papa loved Chinese food so he was always on the lookout for Asian restaurants.
Warm and toasty. They offered a really value-for-money set meal. For 6.50 pounds, we got 2 crispy rice rolls, a big plate of sweet-and-sour pork with white rice. We added tofu and beef hor fun. What a gratifying meal. Ah...Chinese food was always affordable and tasty.
The littlest one was grumpy and did not want to have his photo taken.
Heh, a nice touch at the end of dinner - we got a fortune cookie each and sent the slips to Ah Gong, perhaps the numbers could bring him some luck in lottery.
Ah, foam session, we just missed it and saw the aftermath...ah, the kids would have been thrilled to catch the fake snowfall, but papa was secretly relived that we missed it for he thought it would have been really dirty and messy.
Ah, it looked like it had really snowed.
Richard III tower...ah...we did not go up to explore the tower.
The airbnb house was so lovely. Modern furnishings, awfully comfortable bed (in fact, I had such a wonderful sleep, the best in weeks as Tong slept with me and hence did not wake up throughout the night to check on the time and if papa had gone to work so that he could climb up into our bed), Netflix...
They enjoyed the stay at York so much that they wished that we were staying for one more night. They enthused that York was really pretty...and the house was amazing as there were two TVs and they could watch Netflix..yeah...and the comfy bed and Tong added that he was elated to sleep with me...haha...jie went to snuggle with papa on the sofa bed and said it was very snug too.
